EU climate ministers have agreed to cut emissions 90% by 2040 but added flexibility allowing countries to buy foreign carbon credits, effectively reducing the real cut to about 85%. The last-minute compromise, struck ahead of the COP30 summit in Brazil, marks a softening of Europe’s climate goals amid pressure to protect industries and jobs. Reuters reports on the news.

A review of 35 proposed UK “megafarm” developments found that most failed to assess their greenhouse gas emissions, despite a Supreme Court ruling requiring climate impact evaluations. None of the applications included emission data, even though intensive pig and poultry farms are major methane and nitrous oxide sources, raising concerns that the industry is sidestepping its climate responsibilities. The Guardian covers the story.
